Reflection Blog

I found the conversation my group had about the issue of whether or not pornography should be more strongly controlled to be helpful for me to get back into critical thinking. It has been a year since I have taken a critical thinking class, and it was nice to discuss both view points.
I was one of two people in my group who read Susan Brownmiller’s essay. She feels very strongly about the pornography issue because she is a feminist. I did not read the other essay, but I felt like the people in my group prepared very well and I got the main points of the essay.
Everyone was very respectful and even though we had our own opinions I never felt the need to justify my view.

Hi Alison,
I havent taken any english/ critical thinking class in over two years. So, I was scared to this class, not knowing what to expect.
I feel that Brownmiller's essay was somewhat close minded and wasnt persuasive enough, or maybe it was just the tone of her voice that came upon too strong.
I think its so important for people to be respectful. Its okay to have a different opinion that someone else, but be open minded and try to see their side.

Hi Alison! I think we had a great discussion in our group. It was nice that we were all so well-prepared, and it made it really easy to switch sides without having read the other essay at all. But...I am definitely out of practice since last fall! I like how we don't just read one essay about one side of an issue, instead we read about both sides. It gets me thinking about things I might not be aware of.

i've felt nervous about taking critical thinking classes before too, mainly because so much comes out. I've had lauren before and she does a great job of making sure everyone stays respectful of everyones ideas and beliefs, and she seems to do it in such an easy laid back manner, if only it was as easy as she made it look.
